New Delhi: The Congress has demanded strict action against Delhi police after a video went viral showing policemen in riot gear assaulting students in the Jamia Millia Islamia University library on December 15. The video was released by Jamia coordination committee.


The Congress led by its leader and general secretary of in charge of Eastern UP, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Thiruvananthapuram MP, Shashi Tharoor, demanded stringent action against policemen assaulting unarmed students in a university library.

In her tweet, Priyanka Gandhi referred to the indiscriminate assault on students who are studying in the library. In her Twitter post, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also accused the home minister and Delhi Police of lying about the assault in the library.



Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that if the government did not act against the erring policemen in the video, its intention would be clear. Violence erupted in the Jamia campus during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on December 15. Police had to use lathi charge to disperse violent protesters, Delhi Police officials had stated.

Protests against CAA turned violent in and around the Jamia Millia Islamia University campus in the national capital on December 15. The Delhi Police came under flak from several quarters earlier.

The Union Home Minister Amit Shah, speaking at a media event recently, observed that the police resorted to using batons only when the protesters turned violent.
