The protests have reached the capital with violent students protesting against the Citizenship Act.

New Delhi: Students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University staged a protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill on Friday in New Delhi.

The protests turned violent after the students pelted stones on the roads. The police used tear gas shells to disperse the large groups of protesters.

Students from the Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi clashed with the police who interrupted their protest that opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act that was passed last evening, with the President's consent.

The protesters called for a march to Parliament House from the university campus to express their opposition to the legislation. While marching, they were stopped near the varsity and clashes ensued at the site among protesters and the police. The students accused the police of using force against them.

Many JMI students were detained by the police during the violent anti-CAB protests. Around 2,000 Jamia students gathered to protest against CAB. Police barricades were broken soon after which the police resorted to lathi-charge.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had earlier said that as advised by Delhi Police, entry and exit at Patel Chowk and Janpath have been closed. Metro trains will not be halting at these stations. But according to a latest DMRC alert, entry and exit gates at all stations have been opened and normal services have resumed at all stations. Few main roads have been closed by the police so no public gets hurt in the protests.
