Water Crisis : Water Resources Department asked to make a DPR for Bangalores water requirement

BENGALURU: On Thursday, the government in a bid to mitigate the drinking water woes of Bengaluru, had directed the water resources department to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) over the plan to pipe water from the Sharavathi river water to the city.

G Parameshwara, the deputy chief minister, had chaired a meeting regarding the project and instructed officials to prepare a DPR. He told reporters that, "The government will take a final call on going ahead with the project once the DPR is ready."

According to the plan, water from Linganamakki reservoir across Sharavati river which is located in the Shivamogga district, about 300km from Bangalore will be pumped to the Yagachi dam in Hassan district. It shall so on be piped to Bengaluru.

"Based on the report, a feasibility study was conducted. We are planning to draw 10tmcft of water in the first phase," Parameshwara said.

The project is estimated to be costing Rs 12,000 crore.

Bengaluru receives 1,400 million of water from the Cauvery river basin and work under process to draw another 800mld for the 5th stage project of Cauvery. Provision has been made by the government to draw 2.5tmcft from the on-going Yettinahole project. Parameshwara said, "But the city is growing at a rapid pace and we need more water to meet requirements."
