The elusive maneater tiger has been found alive by forest department personnel in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris area after being on the loose for almost a year. In a year, the tiger is said to have murdered four humans.
The Madras High Court had previously this month directed state officials to guarantee that only a small number of persons enter the forest in pursuit of the animal known as "MDT23," and that it is trapped rather than killed. In its response, the state stated that it had no intentions to kill the animal.
The court was considering a plea to ensure that the tiger, which is considered dangerous, is caught alive and that no attempts are made to kill it.
Meanwhile, several weeks, a big operation was underway to capture the wounded tiger, that had eluded nearly 100 forest department employees and authorities, including many in Kerala's Special Task Force, and tamed elephants.
Hundreds of cameras and traps, as well as sniffer dogs and tamed elephants, have been placed up for the purpose.
As an outcome, traffic near the Gudalur-Masinagudi area was momentarily halted. It was also sighted along the Masinagudi-Theppakadu road on Thursday evening, when officials attempted to tranquillize the animal, but it attempted to flee into the forest.
