Vijayawada: “Pigmentation happens due to increased production of melanin. People with darker skin tones are more prone to pigmentation, especially with excess sun exposure,” said Vasavya Mahila Mandali (VMM) dermatologist and medical director P Deeksha.

Dr Deeksha was addressing a gathering at VMM on the occasion of International Women’s Day as a campaign promoter on ‘We are Beautiful Women’ here on Thursday. She said among women pigmentation was more common on face, neck, back and hands which were exposed to sunlight. She said melasma (brown patches) were common among women with brown patches on face mostly. She said it was difficult to treat patches which would take a long time, whereas pimples also leave patches that could be treated well.

She informed that many internal diseases cause different types of pigmentation. “Applying creams do not help. Some drugs like antibiotics, hypretention drugs and antimalarial drugs also cause pigmentation,” she added. VMM technical support manager Dr B Keerthi, executive body member G Revathi, Anupama, Pushya Ragam, Jyothi and girls were present in the campaign.
