Anantapur: Vani, a B Com final year student of Srivani Degree College here, came under an acid attack allegedly by two youth Raghava Naidu, and Ramakrishna, near the Rudrampet National Highway No 44. She had recently lodged a complaint with police, charging Naidu with cheating her.

The accused, wearing helmets and riding a motorcycle, reportedly threw acid on Vani, a resident of Mudigubba, when she was returning home from college after getting off a bus. The incident took place near Kovurnagar. Vani suffered injuries on her stomach, hands, back and thighs even as she tried to protect her face from the attack. The doctors said she suffered 30 per cent burns. Some passersby responded to her cries for help and admitted her to a government hospital here. Her condition is stated to be serious. Raghava Naidu is reported to have been spurned by the girl and is a resident of Mudigubba.

Anantapur SP Shyamsunder visited the girl at the hospital and made inquiries into the incident. Vani told police that Raghav had warned her of acid attack if she did not withdraw a complaint lodged on August 28 with the Mudigubba police, charging him with cheating her after promising to marry her.

She said the police instead of registering a case held discussions with both sides. Naidu was also alleged to have married another woman a month back. Vani said she had tried in vain to get prevent the marriage by the police. Later, he told media persons that cases under the Nirbhaya Act and also on charges of attempt to murder and harassment would be registered against the two youth. He said special teams were formed to nab the duo.
