Hyderabad: Amazon has been aggressively focusing on the Indian market. After investing on innovative offerings and marketing in the Indian market, the e-commerce major has announced its plans to invest on people for its Hyderabad facility. The company will recruit 13,500 more in Hyderabad in the next three years, it said in a recent statement.

India is Amazon’s third emerging market investment after Brazil and China. According to Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah, it will hire 5000 by the end of this year, taking the number of employees in Hyderabad to 9000. A team from the company had also briefed the ministry about their proposed expansion plan at Nanakramguda Special Economic Zone.

The company is building a 1.6 million square feet of office space to cater to their technical (software development) and non-technical (support, back office operations) teams. The new campus would be first dedicated and owned facility of Amazon outside the US as per the plan. Lakshmaiah also said the e-commerce company was working with their architectural consultants for the design of their facility.

Amazon, which employs over 56,000 globally, had set up its unit in Hyderabad in 2005 with 100 people. It grew to 4,000 in Hyderabad at its leased premises. Though the company was allotted 10.57 acres at Nanakramguda village near here, it could not start its construction activity as the allocation fell into legal dispute, which has now been resolved, the Minister said.

Lakshmaiah also said that Hyderabad will continue to remain a favourite destination for IT investments. Other top IT companies, such as Oracle, TCS and Infosys, will also go ahead with expansion plans. A Google team also met the IT Minister to discuss their expansion plans recently.

The search engine company, which has over 7,500 employees in Hyderabad, would be given 10 acres at Raydurg village, said the minister.
