Minister for Agriculture of Karnataka Krishna Byre Gowda said that researchers of agriculture have to devise the modern methods to help sustain the farming by small land holdings in India. He said the need of the hour was to increase the productivity and reduce crop production cost. Delivering his keynote address at the World Agricultural Forum Congress (WAFC) at HICC on Wednesday, Byre Gowda said that small and marginal farmers cannot afford expensive machines available in the market and the scientists have to invent suitable machines that are affordable by them.

He said that the share of the farm production from small and marginal farmers in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) had been decreasing, while the number of small holdings increasing. “This trend is not good for the country and we should overcome it,” he said. Explaining the scenario of small farmers, he said that the average land holding of a farmer was around 1.4 hectare and the share of agriculture in GDP was 16 per cent. He said that State government planned to increase farm share in GDP to 25 per cent from 16 per cent. “It is impossible to check the increasing trend of small holdings. But, it is the time to find out ways to increase farm production with the present methods,” he said. The Minister stressed the need for implementation of integrated mechanisation, market linkage and increasing production in small holdings.
