Karimnagar: Enraged activists of the CPI and the BJP on Thursday tore away a make-shift temple, made of flexi, for Sonia Gandhi at the Telangana Chowk here to register their protest against the Centre’s reported move for Rayala Telangana, going back on the promise made by the Congress Working Committee. As part of the Telangana bandh called by the TRS, the supporters of CPI and BJP parties converged on the chowk, and soon they turned their wrath on the temple. As the situation turned tense, the police, present in large numbers, took several activists into custody.
However, the alleged manhandling by the police of several BJP Mahila Morcha members led to an uproar. Strongly reacting to the incident, BJP women activists staged a demonstration, resenting the presence of police men, instead of women, during the incident. BJP district Mahila Morcha leaders led by their president Swapna lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of Police, demanding suspension of a CI for allegedly acting in a partisan manner. They alleged that non-bailable cases were registered against 14 party activists.
Swapna accused the Congress leaders of ‘forcing’ the police to register the cases and resorting to abuse of the BJP activists.
Karimnagar DSP Ravinder evaded a reply when questioned why women constables were not deployed while handling the BJP Mahila Morcha activists. He said cases under several sections, including non-bailable offences, were registered.
