Anantapur: More than 430 sheep died after consuming ‘poisonous’ puffed rice here on Monday morning.
According to shepherds, the animals were brought back to the City outskirts on Sunday evening. Almost all 600 sheep belonging to Kondanna and Durgappa ate the pile of spoiled puffed rice found on the road-side, near Mettu Govind Reddy Kalyana Mandapam.
Of them 430 were found dead, while the condition of others being treated was serious. Vet doctors said the puffed rice was sent to lab for testing to identify the poisonous substance.
Stating that they had incurred a heavy loss and that sheep-rearing was their main source of livelihood, the shepherds requested officials to provide financial relief. Officials assured them that they would submit a report to the Collector.
Animal Husbandry joint director Jagannadh Rao, who visited the spot, sought details of the incident from the shepherds.
Legislators Samantakamani and Gurunath Reddy telephoned the Collector seeking his intervention to give assistance.
