Faction Feud Behind Sarpanch’s Murder, Murder of Mannapur Sarpanch Manikyamma. The Telugu Desam leaders said on Thursday that had police acted on her complaint following the attempt to poison her the murder could have been averted.

Mahabubnagar: The murder of Mannapur Sarpanch Manikyamma (55) in Maddur mandal, who was burnt alive on Wednesday night, is being attributed to renewed factions.

The brutal and sensational killing showed that the panchayat elections had turned villages tense owing to sharp political differences and division of people. While the winners celebrated, those who lost the polls developed grudges leading to faction rows. Manikyamma’s murder was an instance of this.

She had won the sarpanch election as a Telugu Desam nominee in June this year with a majority of 36 votes. Till then she was working as an Anganwadi ayah. After assuming the office Manikyamma faced problems from her rivals. Within a month an attempt was made to poison her. She managed to survive and lodged a police complaint. However, she reached a compromise settlement. Tension prevailed in the village following her killing by the alleged political rivals who resorted to the attack using petrol, while she was returning from fields. Special police personnel have been deployed in Mannapur to restore normality. Dog squad has been deployed to trace the killers. Teams have been constituted to look for them, Maddur CI Lingayya said.
