Hyderabad: With 2,124 cases reported this year in the limits of Hyderabad Police Commissionerate as against 1,823 cases in 2012, there was an increase of 16.51 per cent in crimes against women cases, according to Anurag Sharma, Commissioner of Police.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he underlined the fact that 32 per cent of posts in Hyderabad city police were lying vacant, and considering this the overall ‘crime prevention and detection’ during 2013 was good. The Police Commissioner informed that as against the sanctioned strength of 12,401 posts, there were only 8,554 personnel working while as many as 3,847 posts were still vacant. Further, the city police was busy with law and order duties during Assembly Sessions, festivals, Telangana agitation, investigation of bomb blast case and investigation of communal offences of 2012.

Giving details of the overall crimes within his jurisdiction, he said the 2,124 cases of crimes against women included 1,477 cases of harassment, 89 rapes, 35 cases of abetment to suicide, 32 dowry-related deaths, six murders in dowry cases and 485 other cases.

In order to curb these crimes he said: “We have requested the government to sanction funds for opening at least two women police stations in view of the increasing crimes against women and we are hopeful that these would become operational very soon.”

There has been a marginal drop in the overall cases under important categories. While 15,824 different cases were registered this year, the figure was 15,965 last year. The cases reported this year include 103 murders, seven dacoities, 48 robberies, 644 house burglaries, 1,099 hurts, 3,974 ordinary thefts, 124 cases of kidnapping, 2,277 cases of cheating, 74 cases of criminal breach of trust and 112 cases of rioting.

Cyber crimes

The cyber crimes showed almost three-fold increase - from 47 cases in 2012 to 162 cases in 2013. They include six cases of uploading fake profile of women in social networking sites, 42 cases of stalking SMS, Email and calls, 21 cases of job fraud and 17 cases each of online fraud and ATM/debit card/credit card fraud.

Anti-narcotic cell

40 NDPS cases were detected and 80 accused including three foreigners were arrested and the police also seized 72 grams of cocaine, 100 grams of brown sugar, 42 ecstasy pills, 12 grams of ketamine drug, 131 bundles of khat leaves and 412 kg of ganja. Many notorious gangs were apprehended and all the sensational cases were successfully investigated.

Traffic situation

Accidents have come down this year in comparison to previous years. As many as 426 deaths were reported in 2,338 accidents (till December 22) as against 432 deaths in 2,576 accidents last year. The Commissioner said that though fatal accidents have been uniform since 2011, but it needs to be seen that everyday 600 new vehicles were added.

The Hyderabad City Police collected a whopping Rs 45.08 crore from 30,8,915 traffic offenders. Although the number of violators this year went up by just 3,305 compared to last year, the city police collected Rs 3.70 cr additional fine compared to 2012.
