Hyderabad: Both the Central government and the Group of Ministers (GoM)constituted by it on the State division related issues are relying mainly on the information analysed by the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal (KWDT- 1 and 2) to decide on sharing of water in Krishna basin once the State is divided.

As per the KDWT, three projects including Nagarjunasagar, Srisailam and ‘Chennai water supply’ have been identified as common projects of the proposed new state Telangana and the residuary AP State. The two proposed States have to supply five tmcft of water to Chennai from Srisailam on 3.33 tmcft and 1.67 tmcft basis. Likewise, 33 tmcft of water from Srisailam project was shown as evaporation losses – on 22 tmcft and 11 tmcft basis, between the Seemandhra and the Telangana region.

The Tribunal allocated 280 tmcft to Nagarjunasagar Project - 174.3 tmcft to Andhra and 105.7 tmcft to Telangana. It calculated the water available from the rivulets and tributaries of Krishna river basin.

The official sources said that the Home Ministry would incorporate the information prepared by KDWT-1 and 2 on Krishna basin in the AP State Reorganisation Bill-2013 before it was sent to Parliament. There was no authentic body than KWDT to rely on for the information pertaining to Krishna basin, sources informed.

In Krishna basin the KWDT identified another 22 irrigation projects having a capacity of 111.26 tmcft of water which could be shared between the two states. The residuary AP State will get 22.11 tmcft of water as against 89.15 tmcft to Telangana State. Interestingly, another three projects -- Srisailam Right Branch Canal, Pulichintala Project and Rajiv (Bhima) Lift Scheme, having a total storage capacity of 48 tmcft have been identified as new projects based on savings and return flows in the Krishna basin.

In case of Nagarjunasagar project, the evaporation losses were shown in the total allocation of the two regions. Hyderabad Water Supply Scheme was taken up with consumptive use of 3.3 tmcft by making reallocations of 0.2 tmcft from Dindi project, 0.6 tmcft from Vaikuntapuram Scheme, 1.0 tmcft from Nagarjunasagar project and saving of 1.5 tmcft out of 3.9 tmcft towards water supply to twin cities.

Seven projects -- Telugu Ganga, Veligonda, Handri-Neeva, Galeru-Nagari, Kalwakurty and Nettempadu of 227 tmcft capacity -- were shown as projects based on surplus water.
