Hyderabad: The members of ruling Congress have taken a lead role in the debate on AP State Reorganisation Bill in the Assembly. A total of 42 Congress legislators out of 86 MLAs spoke on the Bill. Though the leader of the Opposition Nara Chandrababu Naidu was present in the House he did not get a chance to speak. Some 20 Telugu Desam MLAs spoke on the Bill followed by nine TRS, seven YSRCP, two CPI and one each from AIMIM, BJP, CPM and Lok Satta. Interestingly, independent MLA Nagam Janardhan Reddy and nominated legislator Christine Lazarus took part in the debate. The debate on the Bill continued for 56.01 hours during the 23-day session since December 16.

The House deliberated for nine hours and four minutes on January 22, 2014. Pandemonium witnessed in the House after Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy submitted notice on rejecting the Bill on January 25. Kiran spoke in three installments in three days on the Bill on January 22, 23 and 25.

Many of the Ministers including Minister for Legislative Affairs S Sailajanath, Minister for Mines and Geology Galla Aruna Kumari, Minister for Rural Development Dokka Manikyavara Prasad, Minister for Tribal Welfare P Balaraju, Minister for Panchayatraj K Jana Reddy, Minister for Women Welfare Sunita Laxma Reddy and Minister for Information Technology P Laxmaiah were among the prominent people who participated in the debate.

Deputy Chief Minister Raja Narasimha, Minister for Municipal Administration M Maheedhar Reddy, and Minister for Civil Supplies D Sridhar Babu did not speak in the Assembly, but they submitted affidavits in favour of the Bill to the Speaker.
