Hyderabad: More than 85 per cent of the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) work is being done by ‘precasting’ method. Besides foundations and pillars all other works including parapet (side walls of viaduct), spine, wings and beam constructions are being done in precast format, revealed N V S Reddy Managing Director, HMR, while inspecting Qutubullapur casting yard here on Tuesday.

He was accompanied by MP Naidu, L&TMRH project director, VB Gadgil, chief executive and MD, L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Ltd and other officials.

Highlighting that precast method not only expedited HMR construction works but also saved traffic problems, NVS Reddy said: “The first slab for station construction (concourse slab) is generally laid with supports (centering material) taken from the road base and in the process the roads are closed or converted to one-way traffic but in Hyderabad this activity is being done with precast activity with ‘spine and wings’ approach and traffic management problem is solved.”

The two precast yards set up at Uppal (72 acre) and Qutubullapur (64 acre) produce equal number of viaducts of the total 28,000 required. Also about 13,000 spine, wing and beam segments are to be precast at these two yards.

Qutubullapur precast yard has a production capacity of 400 segments per month and up to 1,400 segments (equivalent to the requirement of 4 km viaduct) can be stacked in this yard. Between two pillars there are 10 segments, each segment weighing about 40 tonnes.
