Act following attack by ‘psycho’ Kumar

Tirumala: In a controversial move, TTD Vigilance officials on Monday took into custody a person, suspecting to be mentally unsound, following the recent attack by psycho Kumar on devotees, who were walking up the hill for the Lord’s darshan.

The person, a devotee who had offered his hair, was under stress.

He has been taking treatment at Ashwini Hospital. Since his condition did not improve, he had reportedly forgotten the cottage, where he was staying.

As he was walking, muttering to himself, the Vigilance staff, suspecting him to be psycho, detained him in a room for two days, after taking into custody.

They failed to give information to police and did not respond even when the devotee showed the treatment papers.

Following the detention, he got more depressed and began shouting and resorting to abuse of persons sporting ‘khaki’ dress. Clearly, the Vigilance staff erred. Normally, they should hand over a suspect they detain to police, as rules stipulate. There have been incidents in the past when devotees after offering their hair behaved strangely, giving room for suspicion about their mental status.
