Srikakulam/Vizianagaram: Union Minister Jairam Ramesh observed here on Monday that while Y S Rajasekhara Reddy became the chief minister after undertaking a ‘padayatra’ in 2004, his son Jagan would go to jail after taking up the same exercise.

Addressing the media, he asserted that the Congress was not finished as being visualised by everyone. It would re-emerge in a new form. Ramesh admitted that the party was facing a tough time and expressed confidence that it would overcome, since it had boldly faced such setbacks. He quipped that only ‘leaders had left the party, but people were still with it.

The minister observed that financial problems were the cause for the Congress lagging behind other parties in the current election campaign.

The minister stated that there was a possibility that Seemandhra would develop following the State’s bifurcation, as a special airport on the lines of one in Hyderabad, an IIIT and Central and tribal universities would be established. Besides, the UPA Government had allotted a Rs.10,000-crore special package for Seemandhra, including packages for four Rayalaseema and three North Andhra districts.

He sought to dispel fears of students by assuring that EAMCET and other competitive examinations would be conducted jointly in both the States for ten years, after the State bifurcation. Village and district-level employees would have no problems; only adjustments needed to be made in the case of State-level staff.

Speaking to the media in Vizianagaram, Ramesh described TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu as an agent of BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. He said voting for TDP would amount to supporting communalism; both TDP and BJP had the same policies. He objected to Jagan claiming Arogyasri, 108 and Indiramma housing as YSRCP schemes. He described the Srikrishna committee as only an ‘advisory body and not equivalent to Bible’.
