Visakhapatnam: The K Sivaramakrishnan Committee to study the alternatives for the new capital for residuary State of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday clarified that selection of the site was not in its purview. It was only to make a feasibility study and not to elicit public opinion.

Visakhapatnam: Search for Capital Underway

Committee member Rathin Roy told the media that it would tour all Seemandhra districts any number of times to collect technical reports from all departments—on the feasibility aspect_besides advantages and disadvantages of locating the capital. The report would be submitted by August end. Local people are welcome to give their views, which would be placed on the website.

The committee met officials of the Visakhapatnam Port, Railways, Indian Navy, police, social activists, fishermen’s community representatives, besides leaders of political parties. Sivaramakrishnan could not make the trip due to indisposition. The members, Dr Rathin Roy, Director, Indian Institute of Public Finance and Policy, Aromar Revi, Director, Indian Institute of Human Settlements, Bangalore, J Shah, Director, National Institute for Urban Affairs, Prof K T Ravindran, former Dean, School of Planning and Architecture, and P Thimma Reddy, Director, Town and Country Planning, were present. The committee visited Madhuravada, Anandapuram, Bhimunipatnam, Atchyutapuram, Rambilli, Duvvada and Pharma City. They returned to VUDA office late noon and convened an in-camera meeting with officials of different departments, including the Eastern Naval Command, Railways, Forest, Municipal Corporation, VUDA, city and rural police.

The panel is learnt to be satisfied with the infrastructure, scenic beauty and tourism potential. Sivaramakrishnan is expected to join the panel in Vijayawada on May 12. The panel received representations from several leaders including Union Minister Kishore Chandra Deo.
