Hyderabad: The TRS government had to face flak from the opposition parties even before it could settle down in the seat of power. The indication that the government would waive off loans taken during the 2013-14 fiscal year had sent shock waves among the opposition parties and the farmers in the state. The Congress, the TDP and the left parties almost pounced on the government and alleged that it was trying to dilute the promises it had made to the farmers during elections. In Nizamabad, some farmers are reported to have resorted to agitation demanding that the government should not limit the scheme to loans taken during the 2013-14 financial year. Taken aback by this sudden outburst of anger both from the farmers and the opposition parties, the TRS took up damage control exercise. Finance minister Etela Rajender on Thursday evening appealed to all the farmers not to get agitated. He said the government had not taken any decision so far on the timeline for waiving the loans. He alleged that a section of media was trying to distort the facts and was trying to create confusion among the farmers. He said it was a deliberate political game plan to defame the new government, he said.

Loan waiver: Government Feels The Heat

Rajender said that the government only held preliminary meeting with the bankers on Wednesday and had sought a detailed report from them on the modalities by Monday. Once the bankers submit the report, the government would examine it and take a decision. The entire process would take about 10 days, he said.

The finance minister also alleged that some political parties were trying to instigate the farmers against the government. He sought to clarify that the government would clear loans of all farmers up to Rs one lakh. For example, if a farmer had taken Rs 5 lakh as loan, the government would pay Rs one lakh and the balance of Rs 4 lakh the farmer would clear, he said.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Congress legislature party K Jana Reddy and the leader in Council D Srinivas said that there should be no time limit for the loans taken by the farmers. Jana Reddy criticised the government for deviating from its electoral promises and said that they would raise the issue in the State Assembly which was scheduled to meet from June 9. He said they had also consulted the TDP, the BJP and the CPI and all the opposition parties would jointly put pressure on the government to see that the farmers would not suffer on account of wrong decisions taken by the government.

Srinivas said that the Congress party would play the role of watchdog in the coming months, as the government was trying to water down important issues which were promised to be resolved.Senior leaders like M Kodanda Reddy, former Minister DK Aruna, Rajya Sabha MP V Hanumantha Rao also demanded that KCR should not let down the farmers who were reeling under debt burden in Telanagana.CPI leader K Narayana, TDP leaders Eraballi Dayakar Rao and L Ramana also asked the TRS not disappoint the farmers of Telangana.
