Hyderabad: Naidu to Take Up ‘Special’ Matter with ModiHyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Government reviewed the objections raised by the Planning Commission in regard to the special category status which was promised by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the Rajya Sabha at the time of passing the AP State Reorganisation Bill 2014. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday held a meeting with the Chief Secretary and some ministers like Municipal Administration P Narayana. According to sources, the meeting was of the opinion that the Planning Commission had only raised a technical objection.

The state does not qualify for special status category as per the existing norms. But since the present situation is a special one and since injustice has been meted to the state during bifurcation of the state, the UPA government had decided to accord special category status and it was an assurance given on the floor of the Parliament.

Naidu is said to have told the officials that he would take up the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In fact, the state government wants that the term of the special status should be for 10 years. Such a demand was made in the Rajya Sabha by M Venkaiah Naidu. Since he himself is a Union Minister, Naidu is learnt to have felt that there would be no problem in getting the status of special category for 10 years.

According to the special representative of the AP government in New Delhi, K Ramamohan Rao, the announcement made by the then PM needs to be ratified by the National Development Council. He said they were confident that the Modi government would get it ratified.

He said there were some states which were opposing it but the NDA government would be able to convince them and would get the decision passed during the NDC meeting which would be held very soon. Meanwhile, the CPI secretary for AP unit K Ramakrishna condemned the objections raised by the Planning Commission.
He said the party could not expect anything better from the Dy Chairman of Planning Commission who was acting like “an agent of World Bank.” He appealed to the Prime Minister to see that justice was done to the truncated state of Andhra Pradesh. The assurance made in Parliament by the then Prime Minister had to be fulfilled at any cost, he said.
