Godavari in Spate. Flood level in River Godavari is increasing rapidly due to heavy rains in its catchment areas in Telangana state including Adilabad, Manthani, Kaleswaram and Bhadrachalam.

Rajahmundry: Flood level in River Godavari is increasing rapidly due to heavy rains in its catchment areas in Telangana state including Adilabad, Manthani, Kaleswaram and Bhadrachalam. Water level of 7.50 feet has been recorded at Sir Arthur Cotton barrage in Dowlaiswaram on Sunday evening and about 5.50 lakh cusecs of water was being discharged into the sea. All the 175 crest gates of the barrage were lifted up to 1 to 1.25 meters and 9,900 cusecs of water was being released for agriculture canals for irrigation purpose.
Speaking to The Hans India, Superintending Engineer Sugunakar Rao said that the discharge might increase up to eight lakhs cusecs by Monday morning. He said that the first warning would be issued only after flood level reached up to 11.75 feet at Dowlaiswaram and discharge up to 10 lakh cusecs. He assured that there would be no problem due to these flood waters as bunds were strengthened at each and every vulnerable point.
High alert in East Godavari
Basing on the first warning given to Godavari River at Bhadrachalem on Sunday, the district administration alerted the official machinery to swing into action to meet any eventuality in view of the rising flood level at Dowlaiswaram. The Khammam District Collector informed the East Godavari District Collector that the flood level was increasing at Bhadrachalam and it may further increase by midnight of Sunday, because of the heavy rains which may result to issue second warning also at Bhadrachalam. Accordingly, Collector Neethu Prasad, alerted the officials of various departments to take precautionary measures in low-lying areas. She also instructed them to open control rooms at the Collectorate, RDOs and Tahsildar offices. She further advised the fishermen not to venture into fishing as there may be strong gales at 40 to 50 kilometers speed, as per the forecast.
Control Rooms
Flood control rooms were opened at the Collectorate, Kakinada with Nos.2365224, 23655428, RDO office, Rajahmundry-2442344, RDO office, Amalapuram-No.233100. Instructions were also issued to open control rooms at mandal-level in the office of Tahsildars.
