Hyderabad: The AP Minister for Transport Sidda Raghava Rao on Thursday indicated that the state government was examining the possibility of going in for a fare hike soon as one of the measures to put the loss making APSRTC back on track.
At a media conference on Thursday the minister said that he had submitted a proposal to the effect to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu explaining that there had been an increase in the operational cost of the buses due to hike in diesel prices. He said despite incurring losses, the corporation had not increased the fares for over a year. The Minister tried to allay the apprehensions of the RTC employees saying that the government under no circumstances would privatise the corporation. He said it was working out several proposals to see that it was made a profit-making organisation.
He also warned the private bus operators for charging high rates on occasions like festivals. The minister said the private bus operators would not be allowed to charge special rates and would have to follow the tariff fixed by the RTC. If they did not follow the rule, their licences would be cancelled, the minister said. Replying to questions, he said the government was aware that a permanent solution to pull the corporation out of the red was necessary. The APSRTC was having an accumulated loss of Rs 1000 crore. He further said the state government had also finalised proposals to buy more than 1,000 buses to face competition from private bus operators and contract carriages. “These days, people are not bothered about the high cost of the ticket, they only want better facilities and services and are ready to pay more” He said in view of this the government had decided to buy 100 buses. It will get another 600 buses with the JNNURM funds.
The corporation would also go in for construction of shopping malls and multiplexes on the properties owned by APSRTC in places like Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Guntur. This would help the corporation mop up more funds, the minister said. The government also proposed to send a delegation to Poland to study the public transport services, he added.
