Hyderabad: The Central Motor Vehicle (CMV) Rules have come handy for transport and non-transport vehicles in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to evade green tax for several years.

The State Motor Vehicles Act and the CMV stipulate that every transport vehicle should pay green tax of Rs 200 annually, on completion of seven years, from the date of its registration. Similarly, non-transport vehicles have to pay the green tax of Rs 500 for five years, on completion of 15 years, from the date of its registration.

Besides, motor cycles too have to pay Rs 250 for five years towards the green tax, from the date of the registration. It is said that majority of the non transport vehicles have not paid the green tax.

The CMV Rules provide that the non-transport vehicle owners have a choice to renew their registration 60 days before the completion of the 15 years period.

It is said that nearly 23,463 transport and non-transport vehicles are yet to pay their green tax dues which have been pending for the last three years. These are only identified cases from Anantapur, Guntur, Kadapa, Nelllore, Srikakulam, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Nizamabad, Ranga Reddy, Warangal and Hyderabad.

Clarifying on this, the Andhra Pradesh Joint Transport Commissioner (Enforcement) SAV Prasada Rao told The Hans India that the department had been making every possible effort to recover the green tax dues.

The Telangana State Joint Transport Commissioner J Panduranga Naik pointed out, “There is no provision for issuing notices to non-transport green tax evaders. However, the dues would be collected, whenever the vehicle owners come for any kind of permissions like change of address, ownership and the like.”
