Vijayawada: In a broad daylight murder, three persons were shot dead at Peddavutapalli village in Krishna district on Chennai-Kolkata national highway on Wednesday. The scene of the offence is 20 km away from here.

The dead were identified as Gandham Marriah (36), Pagidi Mariah (34) and Bandodi Nageswara Rao (55) of Chinnakamidi village in West Godavari district. Gandham Maraiah and Pagidi Marriah were accused in a murder of Bhootam Durga Rao in Chinnakamidi village five months ago.

The assailants trailed the vehicle in which three persons were travelling from Gannavaram after arriving by a flight from Mumbai. Gandham Maraiah and Pagidi Maraiah were said to have been hiding in Mumbai for last five months. They came back to make their presence in the court in West Godavari district. Nageswara Rao was said to have hired the vehicle to pick up his two friends from Gannavaram airport and take them to West Godavari district.

As the vehicle in which three persons reached Peddavutupalli, the assailants stopped it and pumped bullets into them from point blank range, the police said. While two of Gandham Mariah and Pagidi Maraiah died on the spot, Nageswara Rao died of bullet wounds in Vijayawada Government Hospital.

City Police Commissioner A B Venkateswarlu, who visited the scene of offence, said the motive behind the murder could be previous rivalry. The assailants fled the scene of the murder.

Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle in which three persons were shot dead, surrendered before the West Godavari police. He told the police that he had fled the scene of offence in fear of life.

Eluru Correspondent reports: Gandham Mariah and Pagidi Marriah were accused in the murder of the hotelier Bhootam Durga Rao in Chinnakamidi village five months ago. A gang of assailants waylaid Durga Rao and hacked him to death. The followers of Durga Rao went on the rampage in the village and even attacked some houses, belonging to the suspects in the murder of Durga Rao and their supporters. Since the murder, the accused had been hiding in Mumbai and returned on Wednesday to appear before the court.
