In a boost to the new capital region, Vijayawada is all set to become the first Wi-Fi enabled city with 4G connectivity in the truncated Andhra Pradesh, by the end of this year. According to Reliance official sources, efforts are on for the soft-launch of the Wi-Fi service on December 28, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Dhirubhai Ambani. However, the commercial services will only be available for users by April 2015.

It is said that the works related to laying of the optic fibre cable (OFC) lines and setting up the 4-G towers in the city are going at a brisk pace and will be completed by March 2015.

“We are also planning to launch the Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services in the city by March 2015. Our triple service (voice, data and video) will be available as the laying of the fibre-to-the building will be completed in about six months,” said P Manu Vasudevan, general manager, Reliance Infocomm Limited.

According to Reliance officials, 4-G towers do not create radiation problems and they are less harmful on the environment than FM radio. The Dhirubhai Ambani Foundation and Reliance Infocomm Limited are also planning to establish a ‘Signature park’ in the city in about 20 acres of land with an initial expenditure of Rs 2 crore for the benefit of the city people.

“We have urged the State government to allot land for us to develop the park. We have met Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and chief secretary IYR Krishna Rao recently and briefed them on the project and urged them to expedite land allotment. We are hopeful that the land will be allotted for the park soon,” said Manu Vasudevan and added that they would also provide Wi-Fi facility at the park but there will be no entry fee to it.
