Nellore: Villagers caught a gang red-handed when they tried to smuggle a 150-year-old idol of Nandi in a car near Munulapudi of Bucchireddypalem mandal on Thursday. They intercepted the car and caught hold of the four members of the gang while two others managed to escape. The Nandi idol, the vehicle of Lord Shiva, was stolen from Beeramma temple.

The police, who rushed to the spot on coming to know of the incident, confiscated the idol. Speaking to the media here on Thursday, Sub-Inspector Srinivas Rao said that after noticing that the gang was trying to steal the idol, the villagers questioned the gang. The gang made a vain bid to escape in the car with the idol. But, the villagers obstructed the vehicle and pulled out the gang members and damaged the vehicle. He said that 15 years ago some burglars made a vain attempt to steal the idol. The villagers said that attempts were being made to steal the idol as they suspected that there were diamonds hidden inside the idol.
