Vijayawada: Double-dealers in the city have allegedly cheated several gullible people of millions of rupees promising to ensure allotment of houses built under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). A bunch of four cheats allegedly charmed a good number of people to part with their hard-earned money ranging between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh each. They beguiled the unwary persons by relentless name-dropping of those in power. Thus, the gang had collected millions of rupees, it is said.

  • Police refused to interfere because it is a case of civil dispute

The Centre and State government jointly constructed in all 8,000 houses with a good intention to provide roof over heads of the poor who are leading a miserable life in slums. The previous Congress government had allotted most of the houses built at Vambay Colony, Singhnagar and Jakkampudi village. As many as 2,500 houses remain to be allotted to eligible people.

Exploiting the delay in the allotment of the houses to the poor, the racketeers enticed a group of people into parting with their money. Those cheated by the gang grew suspicious as the alleged swindlers failed to respond to their phone calls. The persons, who were allegedly cheated, came together at last and approached the Vijayawada Municipal Commissioner, seeking his intervention to do justice to them. The Commissioner gently reprimanded them, saying that they are not at all eligible for allotment of houses built under JNNURM.

Then they approached the police. But the police too threw up their hands in exasperation because it was a civil case and they cannot intervene. It may be recalled that former mayor Tadi Sankuntala was criticised for promising to ensure allotment of houses built under JNNURM. A group of persons even picketed her. What is more intriguing is that those cheated by the gang refused to pour out their grievances in public because of the fear of stigma.
