YSRCP chief seeks Governor’s intervention in land pooling for new AP capital

Hyderabad: YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on Monday demanded Governor ESL Narasimhan to order a probe with a sitting High Court judge into the ‘forceful’ acquisition of lands from farmers for the construction of AP capital city. Hours after meeting the affected farmers, a party delegation led by YSRCP president Jaganmohan Reddy met the Governor and submitted a memorandum seeking the latter’s intervention in the whole matter.

Urging to protect the farmers who do not want to offer their agricultural lands as part of land pooling, Jagan also brought to the notice of the Governor the recent fire in plantations in the capital city area and sought an investigation by an independent agency. A large number of farmers were against participating in the land pooling scheme, the YSRCP leader said and alleged that the police and revenue officials were harassing farmers and also threatening with dire consequences if they did not hand over their lands. Earlier, Jaganmohan met the farmers who came from Undavalli, Penumaka, Navuluru, Kolagallu and Nidamarru that come under the purview of the capital city. He assured to fight for the rights of farmers who were refusing to give up their lands.

“If the government wanted to become a realtor, it can go elsewhere. Giving trouble to the farmers in the form of forceful acquisition of their fertile lands is unwarranted,” the YSRCP leader said. The party would also approach courts and Human Rights Commissions against the government and seek justice. No force on earth would take away the farmers’ lands, he added.

Speaking to newsmen, party senior leader D Prasada Rao said Jagan would stage a two-day dharna from Janaury 31 in Tanuku in West Godavari district. His dharna would highlight the failures of TDP government in implementing the schemes and the harassment of farmers who were refusing to part with their lands for the formation of the AP capital.
