Vijayawada: “Building a capital city is not building concrete structures,” said State Information Commissioner P Vijaya Babu here on Sunday. Speaking at a State level meeting on “Capital Construction – Transparency” organised by the United Forum for RTI Campaign and Journalists here, he expressed concern over lack awareness among people in Guntur and Krishna districts. “I dare to say that flexi banners at every nook and corner in these cities pose a major threat to the environment. There is no concern for women’s privacy. No political leader or party is highlighting the need for developing basic infrastructure,’’ he said.
Speaking about the significance of the Right to Information Act with reference to building the capital city, he said, “Political leaders should unite for the cause of development. Irrespective of party affiliation, caste and creed, it is very essential for everyone to think in a positive manner. Transparency is needed in the development of capital region. The government should make public all the details pertaining to utilisation of funds for development projects.
A committee needs to be set up with social and RTI activists, journalists and eminent people from other walks of life to discuss, review, disclose and monitor the capital construction works. Every individual in the State should contribute to the construction of the capital city and its development.”
YSR Congress Party leader P Gowtham Reddy said there was a need to involve eminent people from all walks of life in the construction of the capital city. The government should disclose every detail pertaining to the capital city under the RTI Act, he said. TDP State secretary Gottipati Rama Krishna said the government was not promising to build a capital city over night.
Several hurdles were to be overcome to ensure that the proposed capital city was on a par with international standards. Former mayor Jandhyala Shankar, Lok Satta Party State president D V V S Varma, Krishna Delta Parirakshana Samithi convener Kolanukonda Sivaji and others spoke on the occasion. Journalist Magazine chief editor V V R Krishnam Raju presided.
