Visakhapatnam: Amidst chanting of Vedic hymns, Union Minister for Human Resources Development Smrithi Irani on Saturday laid foundation stone for the Indian Institute of Management at Gambheeram village, about 20 km from here. This the first among the 11 premium institutions sanctioned for Andhra Pradesh and an important milestone for the city.

Speaking on the occasion, Irani said she would get the bill on IIM sanctioned in the next Parliament session and launch the new education policy to suit the present needs on January 26, on the occasion of Republic Day. Assuring that the Centre would extend all possible help to develop skills in the State, she said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been persisting on cooperative and competitive federalism for development of both States and the Centre.

The minister has also announced that all premium courses being taught in institutions like IIT and IIM would be available free online to the poor. She said physically-challenged, SC and ST students would get certificates by paying nominal charges. “Our aim is to instill super skills among the youth in order to achieve Prime Minister’s Make In India objective,’’ she said.

On the request of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Irani agreed for setting up of a task force to monitor the establishment of other premium institutions sanctioned by the Centre for the State. She showered praises on the Naidu for his commitment to the State and also the people of the city who overcame the super cyclone Hudhud. “I am quite impressed to see the people smiling all along the way to this venue,’’ Irani said.

Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said Telugu speaking people take pride in contributing super brains to the world and cited the achievement of Satya Nadella. CM Chandrababu Naidu spoke on how he was making efforts to make Visakhapatnam, one of the best cities in the world and AP a knowledge hub in India. Director of IIM-Bangalore Sushil Vachani, who has been appointed as mentor of IIM-Visakhapatnam and State HRD minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao spoke on the occasion. Union Minister P Ashok Gajapatii Raju, local ministers and MLAs were present.
