Srikakulam: Unidentified persons attempted to rob the State Bank of India (SBI) ATM at Ganguvada village in Pathapatnam mandal in Srikakulam district on Friday.According to Pathapatnam Circle Inspector J Srinivasa Rao, two persons entered the ATM room at around 12 noon. Due to hot weather, very few people were on the main road and taking advantage of the situation, the miscreants attempted to rob the ATM.

Meanwhile, some locals who noticed it raised an alarm and tried to catch the miscreants. However, the duo managed to escape from the spot. “No damage was done to the ATM and the cash is safe. We will catch the miscreants soon,” the CI said. In 2013 and 2014, a gang of thieves destroyed furniture and broke open the windows and doors of the SBI branch at Ganguvada in an attempt to rob the bank. But the thieves failed to open the locker in the bank.

Friday’s incident was the third robbery attempt, which was suspected to be made by locals who were well acquainted with the bank and its premises. Earlier, two attempts were made by some locals to rob the bank and subsequently they were booked by the police.
