7th BERTH IN KAKINADA PORT

Kakinada: The clearance by AP government for construction of seventh berth in Kakinada Deep Water Port (KWDP) turned out as a cause of concern for the fisherfolk in and around the port city. It may be mentioned that a MoU was signed between Kakinada Sea Ports Limited (KSPL) the lessees of KWDP and AP government in March this year, to add one more berth to the existing six to accommodate container service.

But the fisherfolk numbering more than 30,000, residents of Parlova Peta, Dummula Peta, Yetimoga and surrounding areas in and around Kakinada city, who eke out their livelihood directly and indirectly on seafood catch strongly object the new construction. The leaders of the fisherfolk Tummala Ramesh and D Polaraju who have been organising protest demonstrations for the last few days, allege that this construction will affect the livelihood, as it blocks the main passage to deep sea for fishing and vice versa from the salt creek area where they tie their boats after fishing.
