As many as 140 pilgrims belonging to Anantapur and Hindupur on way to Kedarnath were stranded as a vital bridge over River Mandakini between Sonprayag and Gaurikund on way to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand collapsed on Thursday evening. Heavy rains have sent the Mandakini river into spate as a result of which the motor bridge on way to the Himalayan shrine was washed away, According to Rudraprayag District Magistrate Raghav Langer there are no casualties.

Hyderabad: As many as 140 pilgrims belonging to Anantapur and Hindupur on way to Kedarnath were stranded as a vital bridge over River Mandakini between Sonprayag and Gaurikund on way to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand collapsed on Thursday evening. Heavy rains have sent the Mandakini river into spate as a result of which the motor bridge on way to the Himalayan shrine was washed away, According to Rudraprayag District Magistrate Raghav Langer there are no casualties.


Sabari, one of the pilgrims said over phone that they were near Badrinath temple and safe. Though some arrangements for food have been made they were inadequate and had to do with one time meal. He said the stranded pilgrims were suffering on account of rain and cold as many of them were aged. While appealing to the Government of Andhra Pradesh to talk to the local authorities and see that they were rescued, Sabari said that the local administration had not reacted.


The AP government has swung into action and the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to take necessary measures for their safe return. He also spoke to the Resident Commissioner AP Bhavan in New Delhi. Minister for Information and Public Relations Palle Raghunath Reddy convened an emergency meeting with officials and has asked them to take all necessary measures to extend help the stranded pilgrims.
