Hyderabad: The special offers given by Andhra Pradesh government like selling liquor through shopping malls to fill its coffers through sale of liquor seems to have become an instant hit with guzzlers. According to excise department sources the revenue from the sale of liquor this July was to the tune of Rs 1200 crore as against Rs 965 crore July last year.

What is more interesting is that the experiment to sell liquor in shopping malls at four places, Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Visakhapatnam and Guntur has been encouraging. These outlets have registered heavy sales of vodka, gin and wine. It is estimated that the sale of liquor in each mall is anything between Rs 3-5 lakh per day.

The highest liquor sale of Rs 130 crore is said to be from East Godavari district followed by Visakhapatnam -Rs 118 crore, Guntur -Rs 114 crore and Vijayawada with Rs 110 crore. The overwhelming response from the consumers buying liquor from malls has come as a great surprise for them and the excise department has decided to permit the malls in some more major municipalities to sell liquor in the state.

It would permit about 50 malls and hypermarkets across the state to sell liquor in the next quarter, officials told The Hans India. The home delivery of liquor by using SMS service in all 13 districts of the State which has been permitted by the AP Government in some villages also seems to have become popular and is likely to be expanded to all rural areas.

Under this scheme all that the consumer needs to do is to send a message to mandal office and intimate the booking details. These details will be forwarded to respective liquor shop, where the order gets processed and liquor would reach the consumer’s door step.
