24 reservoirs going dry, Kharif crop in danger in two States

Hyderabad: Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh are heading for a major water crisis this year. As many as 24 out of 34 reservoirs on Godavari and Krishna rivers in the two States, have received no inflows from the catchment areas. Perhaps, for the first time in the last decade, the main reservoirs on the two big rivers registered ‘zero’ inflows during the South West monsoon season.

The major reservoirs – Srisailam, Jurala, Pulichintala and KC canal on Krishna river, which are the main water sources in Telangana received no inflows that could be recorded. The gross storage levels in Srisailam, which is the lifeline for Telangana and AP for irrigation and drinking water, has come down to 30 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic) of water. The total capacity of the dam is 215 TMC.

In Andhra Pradesh, Veligonda, Mylavaram, Kandaleru and Somasila reservoirs have gone dry. The three reservoirs are the main water resources for Prakasam, Nellore, Kadapa and parts of East and West Godavari districts. Water storage levels in other reservoirs on Krishna– Narayanapur, Nagarjuna Sagar and Pulchintala have depleted with lowest inflows. In Sagar- the gross storage of water was only 132.86 TMC as against 136.82 registered last year.

The fast reducing storage levels at Almatti dam is the main reason for the low inflows in to Krishna reservoirs. The present water level at Almatti dam is only 64.89 TMC as against 107.61 TMC last year. The gross capacity of the reservoir is 129. 72 TMC. Officials of the Irrigation department told The Hans India that deficit rainfall in the catchment areas of Krishna River and weak monsoon in the two States is the main reason for the drying up of the reservoirs.

Water levels in the reservoirs on Godavari River were alarming. Kaddam, Lower Maneru, Nizam Sagar, Singuru and Sriram Sagar dams in Telangana were receiving zero inflows. Water levels in the major reservoir in Sri Ram Sagar registered only 6.97 TMC out of 90.31 capacity.

The other water storage dams in Andhra Pradesh – Thotapalli , Thandava, Gundalakamma, SPVB and Ramathirdha Sagar balancing reservoir were not receiving any inflows from the Godavari and its tributaries. The officials said that the drying up of the reservoirs cast a big shadow on farming activity this Kharif season. Sowing has come to grinding halt in many districts covered under Krishna and Godavari delta.
