Noted Gandhian and Sarvodaya leader Lavanam died of a cardiac arrest here on Friday. He was 86. Eldest son of founder of known first atheist centre in the world, Gora, Lavanam worked in Mahatma Gandhi’s Sevagram ashram and also assisted Bhudan movement leader Vinoba Bhave. He also campaigned for the Gandhi’s ideals and Gora’s Atheist principles.

Vijayawada: Noted Gandhian and Sarvodaya leader Lavanam died of a cardiac arrest here on Friday. He was 86. Eldest son of founder of known first atheist centre in the world, Gora, Lavanam worked in Mahatma Gandhi’s Sevagram ashram and also assisted Bhudan movement leader Vinoba Bhave. He also campaigned for the Gandhi’s ideals and Gora’s Atheist principles.


He championed the cause of humanism and fought against superstitions. He worked against the abolition jogini system in the country and worked to reform the criminals of Stuvartpuram in Andhra Pradesh, besides the Chambal Valley. Lavanam married Hemalatha, daughter of poet Gurram Joshuva and worked for a casteless society.


He also traveled extensively across the world, promoting Gandhian values, Atheism and humanist movement. He also worked against corruption in politics and always wanted the elected representatives to be answerable to people. He wanted the Ministers, MPs, MLAs and other elected leaders to live a simple life.


His family members donated Lavanam’s eyes to Swetcha Gora Eye Bank and his body to Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Medical College as per his last wish. The college would take over the body on Saturday evening once the leaders pay tributes. The Atheist Center is receiving hundreds of socialists, Gandhian leaders and Atheists from across the world who were paying tributes to the leader.


Lavanam was bestowed with Jamnalal Bajaj Award for his dedicated services for social uplift and inclusive growth. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, paid rich tributes to the late leader. He said Lavanam was a great humanist and had served people promoting humanist and Atheist values. MP Kesineni Srinivas, legislator Gadde Ramamohana Rao and several others visited the body of Lavanam and paid tributes.


Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao expressed his deep condolences on the demise of Goparaju Lavanam. The Chief Minister recalled Lavanam’s association, along with his wife the late Hemalata Lavanam, for the betterment of Jogins’ life in Nizamabad district two decades ago. He also recalled Lavanam as a social worker for eradication of caste system in the society.
