Handloom woes
Hyderabad: The wheel seems to be reinventing itself with the centuries-old barter system making a comeback between the two Telugu-speaking States. The bifurcation of cooperative society of handloom weavers has forced the two States to go for exchange of clothing which are popular in their region but made on the other side of the fence.
Andhra Pradesh Cooperative Society of handloom weavers (APCO) was recently bifurcated. The Telangana State’s wing has been christened as the Telangana State Cooperative Society of Handloom weavers (TSCO). But TSCO is yet to get official nod as a brand name.
Meanwhile, both the handloom weavers’ societies have realised that they are cash-strapped post bifurcation. More than the fund crunch, the cooperatives range of clothing on the shelf has been reduced to half. But some of the clothing of Andhra is popular in Telangana and vice-versa.
A demand supply study revealed that Gadwal silk sarees, Karimnagar dhoties and bed sheets are more in demand in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh while Mangalagiri silk, Venkatagiri cotton and Uppada cotton sarees of the Andhra region are most-sought after by people in Telangana. APCO management agreed to meet the demand of TSCO. Since TSCO does not have enough funds, it agreed to supply Gadwal silk sarees, Karimnagar dhoties and bedsheets on a barter system.
The net profit of the APCO this year was only Rs 30 lakh not to mention about TSCO. “The demand for dhoties manufactured by the weavers societies in Karimnagar district is high in Tirumala , the abode of Lord Venkateswara. For the supplies TSCO makes to the APCO, it would get the requisitioned Mangalari silk and Uppada cotton sarees in return. The silk and cotton sarees record highest sales during marriage season in Telangana outlets,” said APCO Managing Director Johar Basha.
APCO has been receiving huge online orders from overseas for the sarees weaved in Telangana. The ongoing procurement from Telangana will help to meet the online demand in the coming days, Johar Basha said. As part of increasing sales in a big way and make the two societies self-sustainable in future, the managements have also decided to open “mega showrooms” in all municipal corporations and promote the range of each state in the outlets.
Out of 1,312 registered societies, 600 have been given to the Telangana state, under the division of assets between the two States as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. Fifty-three showrooms of the total 131 were allotted to Telangana. Sales counters owned by APCO outside AP and Telangana States were also bifurcated. Eleven of 26 have been given to the Telangana State and remaining will be managed by AP. However, the distribution of liabilities between two societies is yet finalised.
