Vijayawada: Thousands of Anganwadi workers affiliated to major trade unions like CITU and AITUC took out a massive rally from Tumallapalli Kalakshetram to lay siege to the Chief Minister’s camp office, demanding immediate solution to their long-pending grievances. The rally turned violent as police foiled it and arrested at least 200 workers.

The Anganwadi workers on Friday organised ‘Chalo Vijayawada' programme to seek implementation of their wage hike and tension prevailed on the Mahatma Gandhi Road, when the Anganwadi workers led by YSR Congress Party leader K Parathasarthy, CPM State secretary P Madhu and Capital Region Committee convenor Ch Babu Rao were halted on the road and raised slogans against Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for in his inability to cede genuine demands of the workers.

To preempt any trouble, police deployed additional forces near the CM camp office. However, tussle between the police and workers occurred when they tried to besiege the camp office and majority of the workers were injured in the melee and some of them fainted on the spot. Injured women were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals for providing first aid. Subarammma, Anganwadi worker of Kurnool district was injured seriously in the protest.

Speaking on the occasion, CPM State general secretary P Madhu strongly condemned the arrest of the Anganwadi staff saying that the latter were fighting for their legitimate rights. He alleged that the TDP government had turned a blind eye to the woes of Anganwadi workers and demanded Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to hike their wages to safeguard their interests. Police arrested CPM State secretary Madhu, party capital region committee convenor Ch Babu Rao and others.
