Minister for Human Resources Development, Ganta Srinivasa Rao said that the private universities bill will be tabled in the current session of the Assembly on December 21. Addressing a round table conference on the bill, which was attended by 22 former vice chancellors here on Saturday, the Minister said that the government is aiming at making the State, a knowledge hub by increasing the standard of education.

Addressing a round table conference on the bill, which was attended by 22 former vice chancellors here on Saturday, the Minister said that the government is aiming at making the State, a knowledge hub by increasing the standard of education.

“We are looking at massive changes in the higher education system and the bill is being introduced for the same. We will take suggestions from the educationists and intellectuals before passing the bill,” the Minister said. Padmasree awardee and chancellor of GITAM Univesity Prof Koneru Ramakrishna Rao said, “We need to develop our own education system with good ethos. There is no need for colonial pattern of education which is hampering our existing model. We also need centralise recruitment to attract best teachers and students.” Prof J V Prabhakara Rao for vice chancellor of Ralayaseema University said that there is a need to create centres of excellence by collaborating with foreign universities which will be on par with the global institutions.

Prof R Madhavai, former vice chancellor of Padmavati Mahila University,said that the State needs well equipped scientific infrastructure so that present generation of students who can pursue research. Founder Vice Chancellor, AP National Law University and Director, School of Law, Gitam University Prof Y Satyanarayana said that school education is fundamental right and higher education is a privilege. “We need integration of inter institutional mobility and uniform selection of curriculum. When the government is collecting thousands of crore by way of educational cess it is their bound duty to provide and upgrade good infrastructure for schools,” he opined. Calling upon educational fraternity, Prof G J V Jagannadha Raju Andhra University‘s first rector stressed on knowledge-based education instead of assessment-based. “Text book reading has become vague and suggestive information is in vogue,” he added. G Sambasiva Rao, Managing Director, Sravan Shipping Services Pvt Ltd and Vice President, AP Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation in his concluding remarks assured all the vice chancellors that chamber would work as a team and be a guiding light to the State government by valuable inputs to improve quality of higher education.
