Tirupati: About 200 street dogs which were detained and sheltered temporarily in the city-based NGO Animal Care Land (ACL) complex were set free here on Saturday, after a hefty and delicious feast as a parting gift.

The dogs from Tiruchanur and adjacent areas were captured few days before the start of annual Karthika Brahmotsavams of Goddess Padmavathi and were kept in the ACL care at the request of the TTD to facilitate the smooth conduct of the Vahana Sevas which were held in the morning and evening during the nine-day long Brahmotsavams.

ACL Founder-Chairman NV Srikanth Babu said that all the 205 dogs which were kept under the care of ACL for 12 days were administered anti-rabies vaccination while 45 dogs were sterilized. The dogs were caught in coordination with Tiruchanur grama panchayat from various localities and also surrounding villages. Animal Husbandry Joint Director M Srinivasa Rao, who was present, lauded the service of ACL for the care of the street dogs.

It is pertinent to note that the capturing of street dogs for keeping them in captivity for a brief period had become a practice during Brahmotsavams of Goddess Padmavathi for the last 13 years, after the unsavory incident of a stray dog scaring the temple elephant carrying the Sare brought from Tirumala to Tiruchanur temple on the occasion of Panchami Theertham, resulting in the fall of Sare and the priest from the top of the jumbo.
