The district administration is gearing up to organise Flamingo Festival which is slated from January 9 to 10 at Sullurpet in Nellore district. Different species of migratory birds and endangered species from various parts of the globe visit the habitat from October to March every year and they prepare nests, hatch eggs and go back to their native places along with their offspring by April. The State government has been organising the festival for the past 10 years aiming at creating awareness on conservation of these rare species.

Flamingo Festival provides a good opportunity for the people, environmentalists and bird watchers to study the bio-diversity of Pulicat lake and Nellapattu Bird Sanctuary and initiate measures to conserve the bio-zones for future generations. Pulicat lake, which is spread over an extent of 460 square km, and thousands of birds (nearly 240 species) visit the lake during winter. The annual visit of birds makes the areas a visual delight to bird lovers. The festival will be held at four venues-Sullurpet High School Grounds, BV Palem, Nelapattu Bird sanctuary and Atakanithippa and the district administration is making elaborate arrangements for the event.
District Collector M Janaki conducted a review meeting with the district officials on Sunday and finalised the activities to be taken up during the festival. She asked them to start ground levelling works at Sullurpet Junior College as part of the festival arrangements and also asked the Municipal Commissioner of Sullurpet to maintain proper hygiene, arrange drinking water, uninterrupted power supply during the festival.
She said that officials should make arrangements with the help of the festival committees by distributing responsibilities to the committee members to make the event a memorable one to the visitors.

Officials were also asked to arrange transport facility for tourists from various places to Sullurpet, Nelapattu, Atakanitippa and Bheemunivaripaem. The officials belonging to the horticulture department, SHAR centre, fisheries, animal husbandry departments are setting up stalls to attract the tourists. Officials are also arranging heli-tourism where services of helicopter would be provided for sightseeing.
