The temple of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala witnessed an unprecedented turnout on Monday for the auspicious Vaikuntha Ekadasi festival. While both the Tirumala ghat roads buzzed with the vehicular traffic, the two footpaths – Alipiri and Sri Vari mettu — teemed with a steady stream of pilgrims since the early morning.

The darshan queue lines meant for common pilgrims stretched out to a couple of kilometres outside the massive Vaikuntham queue complex since 3.30 a.m. Further compounding the difficulties of the TTD management was the VIPs also converging at the town in large numbers. According to the information reaching from the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), by 8 a.m. about 27,000 pilgrims had darshan of the presiding deity and the number went up to 38,664 by 12 p.m. and further to 50,330 while another 50,000 pilgrims, who reached Tirumala for Vaikunta Ekadasi were waiting in the queue complex and in queue lines. The number was expected to increase by evening.

TTD Engineering department has made elaborate arrangements for the pilgrims who came on foot to Tirumala at Narayanagiri Gardens, where queue lines along with temporary mobile toilet units were set up for the convenience of devotees to wait till they were allowed in the queue complex for darshan. The food arranged by Annaprasadam department, distribution of food packets by water wing and impeccable services by a big contingent of 2,700 Srivari Sevakulu won the appreciation of the pilgrims.

A devotee Dr Sudhir from Vijayawada said that he and his family members have been visiting Tirumala for Vaikuntha Dwara Darshan for the past seven years. This time, we are happy with arrangements made by the TTD, he added. Meanwhile, TTD EO Dr D Sambasiva Rao and Tirumala JEO K S Sreenivasa Raju personally monitored the arrangements at various places and instructed the officials of concerned departments to see that pilgrims are not put to any inconvenience. The Vertical Gardens raised on Maha Dwaram premises by the TTD Garden department for the first time on an experimental basis for the occasion was a cynosure to the eyes of the visiting devout. The electrical illuminations of the entire Prakaram and some mythological themes added to the beauty and glitter of Tirumala temple.
