For the first time in the State, every poor Christian family is being given the ‘Chandranna Christmas Kanuka’ under the white ration card. Each family is being provided one kg each wheat flour, Bengal gram, half kg red gram, half litre palm oil, half kg jaggery and 100 ml ghee.

Civil Supplies Minister Paritala Sunitha on Wednesday launched the Chandranna Christmas Kanuka distribution in CSI Church, Arvindnagar, under the auspices of the Minority Welfare department. Speaking later she declared that welfare of the poor was the motto of the government. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was keen that every poor Christian family in the State should happily celebrate Christmas. Hence the government was extending the Chandranna Christmas Kanuka to Christians, who form 20 per cent of the population.

The Minister stated that Christians from today onwards could secure their kanuka commodities from the fair price shops. This will benefit 34,756 Christians in the district. She said the kanuka benefits were reaching 1.2 crore during Sankranti and 11 lakh during Ramzan.
According to Sunitha, as against the estimated cost of Rs 275, the six kanuka items were being made available for Rs 195, after tenders were invited in a transparent manner the commodities were purchased.
The cost of the items rose to Rs 210 (as against Rs 240 in the open market), after the transport and the dealer’s commission were added. Thus the government was able to save Rs 3.5 crore by selling the items 11,67,315 cardholders in the district. She pointed out that the government also saved Rs 42 crore State-wide by selling the commodities to 1,00,41,133 white cardholders at controlled prices, as against those prevailing in the open market.
