Make agri profitable, Sivaji tells Jaitely

Vijayawada: The former MP and Kisan Foundation chairman, Dr Yalamanchili Sivaji, on Tuesday, appealed to the Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitely, to make agriculture profitable to the farmers and villages livable.

Dr Sivaji participated in the pre-budget consultations of the Finance Ministry and presented a paper on agriculture. He said that the farmers are not protected and the minimum support price (MSP) is not assured. He further stated that the States have different policies towards farming activity though it dominates the economy of the country. He wanted the Centre to direct all the States to announce minimum assured price (MAP) and ensure that the price is paid to the farmers by the buyers in the market. He also wanted the Finance Minister to treat the country as a unit and allow the farmers to sell their products as in the case of the industrialists.

The former MP said that the farmers were being pushed into the debt trap and were ending their lives unable to come out of the trap. He wanted the government to extend the incentives and other benefits given to the sick industries and help the farmers. He also wanted the government to extend financial and other support to the farmers at times of calamities.

Referring to the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), Dr Sivaji, wanted the government to link it to the agriculture work. He felt that the villages, which maintain the list of workers engaged in NREGS, may be attached to the agriculture activities during the season to ensure that the farmers have no problem in finding work force.

The former MP, who had been giving his views on agriculture in every pre-budget consultations, wanted the government to strengthen and improve infrastructure and other facilities in the villages and make them livable. He said that families were migrating to the cities for health and education, besides work. He wanted the Finance Minister to provide these facilities in the villages and make them livable to prevent migration.
