Vijayawada: The environs of Municipal Corporation Office, Council Hall and Head Water Works will make use of the solar energy to meet their needs in next few days, as the installation of the rooftop solar panels was completed at the selected corporation buildings. It is already known that Vijayawada is the only city in Andhra Pradesh that figures out in the list of 60 solar cities across the country as declared by the Central Government. In this regard, a survey was organised by the VMC officials and panels were installed on the selected corporation buildings. About 500 kilowatts of electricity will be generated as the installation of control panels completed already and about 450 units would be generated from each system per day, said a senior official from VMC.

Speaking to ‘The Hans India’, VMC Commissioner G Veerapandian said that the VMC had entrusted the solar panel installation works and its maintenance for 25 years to PPS Enviro Power Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad. The VMC had been spending more than 3.5 crore per month and Rs 42 crore per year in paying the electricity bills of water purification centre, Head Water Works office. If solar energy came in to existence in time, it would benefit the corporation to save its revenue being spent on paying the electricity bills up to some extent. In this regard, the VMC opted the BOOT basis as it was not financially sound to sanction Rs 3.5 crore amount to take up the project, which was estimated at a cost of Rs 5 crore. Earlier, the Central Government has sanctioned Rs 1.5 crore to the corporation for the ‘Solar City’ project to install 500 KW solar panels on the selected buildings, he reminded.

The Civic chief said that VMC had also conducted a survey and identified possible localities to install solar panels at other places of the city to harness the solar energy in larger way, which include IGMC Stadium, DRRM Indoor Stadium, VMC Vehicle depot, Gandhiji Municipal High School. AKTP High School, NTR Complex, Vastralatha Complex, CVR School and Brahmanandh Reddy Complex.

Plans are also afoot by the corporation to install solar roof panels on the canal bunds of Eluru and Bandar canals on the lines of Gujurat to make use of the solar energy on large extent for future needs, said VMC Commissioner G Veerapandian.
