Punters splurge `350 cr on cockfights
West Godavari district witnessed cockfight in various villages for the last three days. However, comparing to last year, the rings to conduct cockfights were increased.
Eluru: West Godavari district witnessed cockfight in various villages for the last three days. However, comparing to last year, the rings to conduct cockfights were increased. In every nook and corner small or big rings were arranged in various constituencies. The MLAs concerned participated in the cockfight on the first day-- Bhogi festival. Celebrities like music director Koti, cine director Kodandarami Reddy watched the cockfight in Bhimavaram area.
Crores of rupees was pumped into gambling linked to cockfight. I Bhimavaram in Akiveedu mandal recorded some dullness comparing to earlier seasons. The Prakruti Ashram in Bhimavaram did not conduct the cockfight this time. Sisali in Kalla mandal was the centre of attraction this time. Narsapur area was now indulged in state-level volleyball and kabaddi tournaments. In Agency area, Jangareddigudem, Polavaram, Buttayagudem, Koyyalagudem mandal villages witnessed the cockfight and allied activities like playing cards and dice games.
In Denduluru constituency, MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar participated in the cockfight at Koppaka village on Bhogi day. The cockfight was organised in Koppaka, Pedavegi, Denduluru, Gopannapalem areas. In Chintalapudi constituency, cockfight was conducted in Chintalapudi rural area, town, and other areas. It was estimated that about Rs 350 crore was involved in the cockfight.
In Eluru rural mandal, cockfight was conducted at Kodelu, Jalipudi and other areas. Punters enjoyed the three days in the cockfight. Even there was no untoward incident in the district, the police failed to stop cockfight and allied activities as per the order of High Court.
