Craze for silk fabrics gives the farmers much-needed boost

Kakinada: Sericulture farmers in East Godavari district, who are in dire straits due to lack of remunerative price for silk yarn, have found new hope with youth looking at silk fabrics.

Sericulture has received a setback, when Chinese silk dominated the market as the government slashed the import duty to 10 per cent. In addition to this, unauthorised imports have wrecked the local market.

In this view the spurt in demand for silk fabrics among youth has given boost to sericulture in the district. This led to the hike in price of the silk cocoon froim Rs 200 per kilogram to Rs 370. This has also reflected on the price of raw silk yarn, which rose to Rs 2,300 - 2,500 from Rs 1,800 - 2,000 per kilogram.

It has be noted that the farmers have taken up sericulture in more than 1,000 acres, which produces silk cocoons to the tune of 260 metric tonnes and silk yarn of 50 metric tonnes per annum.

B V Anand, Deputy Director of sericulture department said that they have taken up the issue of import duty to the notice of Union Commerce ministry through Central Silk Board in Bengaluru.

“We are hoping that the Union government will take appropriate decision to sustain the local market,” the DD disclosed.
