Machine to drive away wild boars

Nandyal: A Bio-Acra Stick Machine has been set up on an experimental basis at Narayanpur village to drive away wild boars, which have been causing damage to crops like groundnut, jowar, maize and red gram in thousands of acres in Nandyal sub-division.
The machine, costing Rs 25, 000, has been designed by Vasudeva Rao of Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University. The machine has been set up as a gesture towards ryots by the Forest department, said DFO Sivaprasad. The machine, which gets charged through solar energy during the day, emits sound, thus warning wild boars and preventing their attack on crops.
During his interaction with farmers, the DFO stated that when the machine was switched on the wild boars were not found. They appeared on the scene when it was turned off for two days. The animals did not turn up when the machine was switched on two days later.
Sivaprasad said if the machine was found to be successful a report on it would be submitted to the State government. It would be possible for the government to provide the machine on subsidised rate. The farmers had been installing electric fencing around their crop to foil crop damage by wild boars.
Although the menace was reduced to some extent there were more cases of people getting injured or died due to electric shock. The Forest Department had warned that killing of wild boars by electrocution attracted provision of the Wildlife Protection Act. Hence, it arranged the machine.
