Hyderabad: Former MP Vundavalli Arun Kumar strongly opposed conferring of prestigious National Award ‘Padma Vibhushan’ to media baron and filmmaker Cherukuri Ramoji Rao for his alleged involvement in economic offences, civil, criminal and revenue cases.

Speaking to media persons on Thursday, he said that being Indian, he would oppose the Centre’s decision, as it would send a wrong message to the entire nation.

Conferring the prestigious award to a person accused in economic offences, whose penalty alone would fetch Rs 5,000 to 6,000 crore and a jail term of 7 years.

“I have appealed to the government that let the court give him clean chit before conferring him with the award. If the court gives him clean chit, then you can also confer him with Bharat Ratna award.

But at this juncture, when several cases are pending against him, this would send a wrong message,” he said.
