Rajahmundry: While the State government and opposition parties are locking horns over prestigious irrigation projects like, Polavaram Project and Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (PLIS), tribal farmers are left to the vagaries of the nature. The Agency areas, where irrigation project will help to store water from rivulets, are neglected.

Time and again the farmers in Agency areas have made pleas for irrigation project to cater to both irrigation and drinking water needs but they have gone to deaf years and plans never graduated beyond files. Y Ramavaram mandal, a remote area in the Agency area of the East Godavari has been looking for irrigation project for decades.

Nearly, 100 villages in the mandal are waiting in anticipation for a project to cater to their drinking water and irrigation needs. The mandal has abundant natural water resource in form of Dummakonda rivulet, which passes through Gannavaram village in Yarlagadda panchayat and tribals are demanding project at Gannavaram.

If built, the reservoir will have the capacity to provide water to 30 villages apart from irrigating 10,000 acres in the region. A survey has been conducted for this project in 2005 and estimations have been prepared with Rs 12 crore during the tenure of Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy.

Sadly, that was the end of it, with neither the government nor the ITDA pursuing the project; it was in cold storage since. Farmers in Y Ramavaram mandal are alleging of step-motherly love. “Rajavomangi mandal has Vattigadda check dam, Addatheegala mandal has Maddigadda reservoir, Gangavaram has Surampalem project, Devipatnam has Musurumilli project and Rampa Chodavaram mandal has Bhupathi Palem project and we have none,” they lamented Pallala Venkata Ramana Reddy, village head of Yarlagadda of Y Ramavaram mandal maintained that the farmers in the region cultivate paddy, corn and other crops and said that if the project is built, it will provide water to 500 villages.

“Farmers are ready to give land for the project,” he asserted. Women are lamenting that it is getting increasingly difficult to raise cattle due to lack of water and are appealing to the State government and ITDA to act swiftly to construct project on Dummakonda rivulet.
